Periodontics & Dental Implants

Dental Implants

A dental implant is a permanent, artificial tooth root that is a foundation for a prosthetic crown. It can be a more effective and convenient alternative to bridges and dentures.

Dental implants are titanium screws that are surgically inserted into your jawbone. An implant is constructed of titanium, because the body does not perceive that substance as a foreign object. Over the course of several months, the bone heals around the implant, creating a strong foundation for your new tooth.

In addition to the screw, a dental implant has two components:

Abutment
This is a connector between the screw and crown.

Crown
The crown is the visible part of the tooth. It is made of natural-looking porcelain.

There are several types of implants available:

Single
One implant replaces a single tooth.

Multiple
Multiple implants are an option if you are missing several teeth. Implants are inserted to fill the gaps, leaving the other teeth undisturbed.

All-on-Four
Full-arch, fixed-bridge implants, or all-on-four, are full bridges upheld by four dental implants. These implants function as anchors for your new set of teeth. One of the biggest benefits to this type of implant is that it’s permanent and looks more realistic than dentures. All-on-four implants can replace both upper and lower teeth.

There are numerous reasons why people may choose a dental implant:

• Improved appearance
• More confidence.
• You’ll be able to easily chew and eat.
• They stay in place without denture adhesives or pastes.
• They don’t need to be soaked in water every night.
• There’s no risk of them inopportunely falling out as there would be with
dentures.
• They’re permanent.
• They look natural.
• You can talk clearly.

If you take good care of your implants, they can last a lifetime.

A crown can be constructed of a number of different materials:

• Stainless steel
• Metal
• Ceramic
• Resin
• Porcelain fused to metal

• Cobalt-chromium
• Nickel-chromium
• Platinum
• Gold
• Porcelain (This is the most popular)

Most crowns last between five and 15 years.

Crowns

A dental crown is a custom-fitted, prosthetic cap that is used to improve a damaged tooth’s appearance and restore its strength, size and shape. It has numerous uses, including protecting a weak tooth from cracking, holding a dental bridge in place, repairing a broken or worn-down tooth and covering extremely discolored teeth.
Crown installation is an in-office procedure that follows these steps:
• Your dentist will use a local anesthetic to numb your tooth and gums during the procedure. They will then file and remove the outer layer of your tooth, so the crown fits properly.
• Next, your dentist will make an impression of your tooth, so its exact dimensions can be replicated. For this part of the procedure, you may be asked to bite down into putty in a mouth guard, which hardens into a mold of your teeth. More often, though, these impressions are done quickly and cleanly with a digital scanner.
• The new crown takes approximately two weeks to make, and in the interim your dentist will place a temporary, protective crown on your tooth.
• When the permanent crown arrives, your dentist will fit it onto your tooth and permanently cement it in place.
You may also get a same-day procedure. With the aid of CAD/CAM technology (computer-aided drafting/computer-aided manufacturing), your dentist will create your crown right in-office in about two to four hours.
Just like regular teeth, teeth with crowns are still susceptible to decay and gum disease, so they need to be brushed and flossed. Also, avoid eating hard food such as candy, nuts and raw vegetables, because they could break or crack the crown.

Preventative

We invite you to schedule a dental exam today. If you have your teeth cleaned on a regular basis, you decrease your risk of getting cavities or experiencing gum disease.
